Through dynamic activities including percussion, body percussion and dance movements, students will explore aspects of Brazilian cultural heritage and develop musicianship as well as social, Portuguese language and cognitive skills.
The focus is on Northeast Traditions known in Brazil as Cultura Popular Brasileira: Ciranda, côco, maculelê, maracatu, samba de roda and capoeira. All taught in a joyful environment!
Rhythms and Dances will run as an 8 week session starting February 6th. Students are welcome to join at any time during the 8 weeks but we strongly recommend that students join at the beginning to experience the program in its entirety.
The curriculum was developed by Claudia Lyra, an expressive arts specialist and artistic director of the Brazilian education and performance group, Nós de Chita. Claudia has a BA in Psychology and is currently enrolled in the Bilingual Education Masters Program at SDSU.
